How it works

Pick squares on a real map of a real place. When the hunt closes, the closest square to the hidden treasure wins. Some hunts also contain hidden Pigeon prizes. You can also enter free by post.

1. Choose a hunt

Each hunt covers a real location — a town, a park, a stretch of coastline — divided into one-square-metre squares.

2. Claim your squares

Zoom into the map until the grid appears, then tap the squares you want or select a random set. Choose the available square selection size you want and assign your squares a colour. Every square you claim is yours for that hunt and is displayed on the map.

Each hunt shows its price per square before you pay. A small minimum applies because card processing fees make very small payments impractical — and remember, no purchase is necessary to enter at all.

3. A prize is hidden in advance

Before a hunt opens, the main prize is assigned a fixed secret point within the hunt area. That point is recorded at that moment and never moves — it is not chosen after entries close, and it does not depend on who owns which squares.

4. The prize grows with the hunt

Each hunt advertises its main prize as an “up to” amount. This is the maximum cash prize available in that hunt.

The actual prize grows as paid entries are made. Each hunt shows the percentage of paid entry fees allocated to the main prize. That percentage is fixed before the hunt opens and does not change.

At the closing date, the main prize is calculated by applying that percentage to the total value of valid paid entries received for the hunt, up to the advertised maximum prize.

For example, if a hunt allocates 50% of paid entry fees to the main prize and £100,000 of valid paid entries have been received when it closes, the main prize is £50,000.

Free entries have exactly the same chance of winning as paid entries. Because no entry fee is paid for them, they do not increase the cash prize.

5. The hunt closes on a fixed date

Every hunt has an opening date and a fixed closing date, shown on the hunt page before you enter. It may close sooner if all available squares are claimed, but we will not extend the closing date simply to sell more entries.

When the hunt closes, we reveal the hidden point. The winner is the owner of the valid square closest to that point. Hold the exact square and you cannot be beaten.

If two squares are exactly the same distance away, the square claimed first wins.

The hidden point never moves to match an entry. If the closest claimed square is some distance away, that square still wins.

Winners are contacted using the details provided with their entry.

Instant wins

Some hunts include instant-win squares, fixed before the hunt opens. If you claim one, you immediately receive free squares in that hunt and we email you to let you know. As with the hidden treasure, the locations of instant-win squares are set in advance.

Catch the Pigeon 🐦

A pixel-art pigeon

Some hunts have loose pigeons hiding in them — bonus prizes alongside the main prize. Each pigeon has a secret location inside its own search zone. Its location and zone are fixed in advance and do not move.

Here is the game: after you enter, we tell you which of your squares are inside a pigeon's search zone — they glow gold on the map. That is your clue. We do not tell you where the pigeon is within the zone, how far away you are, or anything about anyone else's squares.

When the hunt closes, the pigeon's location is revealed. Of all the claimed squares inside that pigeon's zone, the closest square to the pigeon wins its prize. Hold the exact square and you cannot be beaten.

If two squares are exactly the same distance away, the square claimed first wins.

Being inside a pigeon's zone does not mean you have won — it means your square is in the hunt for that pigeon.

Free entries play for pigeons on exactly the same terms as paid entries.

No purchase is necessary. Every hunt offers a free postal entry route with exactly the same chance of winning. Here is how to use it.

Free squares for sharing

You can claim one free square per hunt using the share feature. This is a one-off reward for each hunt, not a weekly reward. This is separate from the free postal entry route.
